A Day In My Life

Where I’ve Been | My Experience With Nexplanon Birth Control

I’m sure majority of you have noticed my absence, and for that I do apologize. It wasn’t something that I had intended to happen, but in light of what I’ve been going through emotionally, mentally, and physically I feel it was the right call.

For the last couple of months I have taken a leave from all of my social media platforms. I missed writing my blog posts, pinning new helpful things, and tweeting to fellow writers. However, during that period of time I knew I had to take a break and focus on my own health and well being.

On the 17th of May I had the birth control implant Nexplanon placed in my arm. Most of my friends had it, and I thought it would be a good and effective method for me as well. I was always forgetting to take my pill, or taking it late, and if I did ever choose to become sexually active I wanted an effective back up incase of faulty condoms.

Right away my moods changed horrifically. I was mad for no reason, at people I had no reason to be mad at. I was aware that my mood was changing but I felt like I couldn’t stop it. Then came worsening anxiety, followed by a bout of depression. I was crying all the time, and didn’t want to leave my bed. It kept me from being me and doing the things that I loved. It seemed like things got worse before they got better. It was the end of June before my moods had stabilized and return to normal. I felt like myself again.

But that wasn’t all this thing had in store for me. I started my “period” on the 10th of June. It has raged on since then. My GYN put me on 1mg of estrogen this past week in hopes of stabilizing the lining of my uterus, but I don’t think it’s working.

I was told that my case was a rarity by my doctor, but upon researching I saw otherwise. I want to say if you’re a women considering this method of BC I would shy away from it unless you’ve been on something similar. It really fucked me up, for the lack of better words, and I wish I hadn’t gotten it.

My posts aren’t going to go back to being “regular” per say, but I am going to work on it. I’m not making any definite promises as I’m on yet another pill, and there’s no telling of how the estrogen my effect me.

Book Review: The Vampire’s Pet (The Vampyr Book 1) by V.R. Cumming

Genre:

Adult Fiction // Erotica // Vampire // Paranormal Romance // LGBT // MM Romance

Series:

Yes this is the first book in The Vampyr Series.

Publication Date:

Published by Bone Diggers Press on September 19th 2014

Where To Find It:

Amazon // Barnes & Noble // Kobo // Goodreads // Apple

Synopsis:

Eric Logan is twenty-one, a physics major at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, and a geek. All he wants is to make it through college in one piece. If he can find a woman to share his life with, well, all the better, but he doesn’t hold out much hope of that happening. He’s learned the hard way that women find shy, safe men too boring to keep around for long.

While attending a party with his friend Devin, Eric meets the vampire Elizabet, who offers him a spot in her stable of blood slaves. Not long after, the lovely Gianna Brady walks into his life. With her in his heart and a job as a vampire’s pet, Eric finally has the life and love he’s always wanted and is eager to begin his journey through the hidden society he’s now a part of, a society where blood and sex are used to cement alliances and control the violent nature of the beast within.

The world of the Vampyr isn’t as easy to navigate as it appears, however, and Eric is soon lost in a whirlwind of obstacles and complications. Devin isn’t content with the friendship Eric craves; Marco, Elizabet’s favorite, has plans for his mistress’ newest pet that Eric isn’t keen on fulfilling; and the vampire queen needs a strong ally. As he struggles to find his place in this new world, Eric is pushed to the limits of his humanity and wonders if he’ll ever find his way back to it again, or if the monster he’s becoming will consume him and everyone he loves in its thirst for power and blood.

Review:

Going into this book I had never read M/M Erotica book before. I wasn’t really sure what exactly to expect. Sure I’d read the fluffy LGBT YA and NA books but nothing quite like this.

Something else that I found interesting going in was that the story was told in episodes. I now know that The Vampire’s Pet had originally been released as a serial, and it has now been compiled into a series of books. I find that kind of cool. This also meant that it isn’t the typical length that most erotica has. Normally 50 pages is quite average with books within the erotica genre, but The Vampire’s Pet came in with over 300 pages. Which I really did like.

This book contained a mixture of different sexual partners. Sometimes it was three guys, sometimes it was two guys and a woman. Which is very different from what I’m used to reading. But I liked it. The sex scenes within were all very hot and edgy. If you weren’t one for Fifty Shades of Grey then you definitely aren’t going to like The Vampire’s Pet because they contain a lot of similar things. Only V.R. Cumming kicked it up a notch.

Not all of the sex was consensual so if that is a trigger for you I would advise against reading this book entirely. The same goes for if torture or punishment is also a trigger.

I really wasn’t a big fan of the characters themselves. I mean they were alright, but I feel like the development wasn’t completely on point. I feel like their development was rushed because the sex in the book was such a big part of the plot line.

Something that I can say is that I didn’t find any typos, spelling, or grammatical errors in The Vampire’s Pet. So props to Cumming for that one.

All in all I think it was good. It was really new and different for me, and I think I might dabble in reading more things similar. So I think that I’m going to give this book a 4/5 star rating.

On Writing | 6 Reasons Why Reading Is Essential For Writers

I’m sure you all have heard that in order to progress as a writer you must read. You might think that it isn’t as nessecary as everyone makes it out to be, but I can assure you that it one of the best things you can do to improve your craft.

Why reading is such an important part of being a writer goes much further than you might think. Here are some key point to keep in mind of why it is so important.

  • You are exposed to many different genres
  • You are exposed to many different styles of writing
  • Say you wanted to write a book but didn’t know exactly how, you can get ideas from the way other authors have written similar topics
  • Reading can inspire you
  • Reading can widen your vocabulary
  • You can find popular tropes within your niche

Those are just six examples of why reading is important to us writers, but the list goes on and on. There are so many benefits to it.

Speaking from experience I feel like reading has genuinely helped me better my writing skills. If you follow me on here quite regularly then you know I read a lot of different books. I think that’s another key factor. If you read “easy” books, or those within your comfort zone, it is harder for you to grow.

I hope that some of you found that this post helped you in some way. If it has let me know! I love connecting with fellow writers.

BOOK REVIEW: Bound By Honor (Born in Blood Mafia Chronicles Book 1) by Cora Reilly

Where You Can Find It:

Amazon // Goodreads // Nook // Apple // Kobo

Genre:

Romance // Erotic Romance // Suspense // New Adult // Contemporary Romance

Series:

Yes this book is the first book of the Born in Blood Mafia Chronicles. However, all books in this serious revolve around different characters within the same world. Therefore they can be read independently or as a series. It’s totally up to you.

Synopsis:

Born into one of the leading Mob families in Chicago, Aria Scuderi struggles to find her own path in a world where no choices are given. Aria was only fifteen when her parents betrothed her to Luca – The Vice – Vitiello, the oldest son of the head of the New York Cosa Nostra to ensure peace between the two families.
Now with eighteen, the day Aria has been dreading for years is looming dangerously: her wedding to Luca.
Aria is terrified of marrying a man she hardly knows, especially someone like Luca who got his nickname ‘the Vice’ for crushing a man’s throat with his bare hands. Luca might be one of the most sought after men in New York thanks to his good looks, wealth and predator-like charisma that radiates power, but the society girls throwing themselves at him don’t know what Aria does: that the bad boy aura isn’t just a game; blood and death lurk beneath Luca’s striking gray eyes and arrogant smile.
In her world a handsome exterior often hides the monster within; a monster who can just as easily kill as kiss you.
The only way to escape the marriage to Luca would be to run away and leave everything she’s ever known behind but Aria can’t bear the thought of never seeing her family again.
Despite her fear, she decides to go through with the marriage; Aria has grown up among predators like Luca and knows that even most cold-hearted bastards have a heart and she has every intention of working her way into Luca’s.

Review:

Guys I am so excited to be diving into another series. I feel like every time I begin a new book I’m entering in a totally different world and I’m obsessed.

When I first saw the cover of Bound by Honor I was intrigued. Most new adult and erotic romance books have half naked people all over the cover, but this one didn’t have that so I though I’d look further. After reading the blurb I knew this series was going to be my new thing.

Since Bound by Honor is mafia based I was a little concerned that, that particular element of the story might be over done. You all know that there are those books out there that are just too much. I’m happy to say, that in my opinion, it wasn’t. I think Reilly did a fabulous job of tying all of the story’s elements together.

Something else that I found that I loved about Bound by Honor was the characters. I know that it could be said that Aria was a “poorly” written female lead because she was submissive, but that is something that I don’t necessarily agree with. I feel like Aria fit into her role, and she was written in a way that felt so real. That’s something that I adore; when characters are written just that good.

Like I had said before this book, because of the mafia theme, could’ve become very extra at the hands of a different writer. That being said I feel like Luca was very well written as well. I do with that I had gotten to know him a little more. Yes you get to know him, but you get to know Aria a lot more. With both of them being our main characters I feel like we should get to know them equally. Even with that being said I still fell like the characters were written well.

This being a erotic romance book there is sex, but because of the situation the characters are placed in the sex is not something that has been rushed. It was done in a way that contributed to the story. Descriptions all across the board were amazing, and I was never left to wonder.

Overall the book was very good, and I do plan on continuing the series. I’m giving it a four out of five stars which is pretty average on my scale. It was a really good story, but it didn’t blow me away.

Monthly Goals

My Five Goals For May

I just want to say that I’m sorry this post is like two weeks late. I just have a lot going on all at once.

It’s crazy how time just flies, isn’t it? I feel like it was just last week that I had started my senior year of high school, and here I am with less than a month until graduation.

This month has already been busy, and I know that it’s going to continue to be as such. Therefore, I am going to be quite conservative when it comes to my goals for the month of May.

Goals:

  • Post three book reviews this month
  • Read five new books
  • Stay active on social media
  • Finish course registrations (this may not be able to be done this month due to CollegeBoard)
  • Drink more water

These goals seem pretty attainable for me to accomplish, or so I’m thinking. I have a stack of finished books that I need to finish writing reviews for, and I have more books lined up that I have to read for review. I just really want to get caught back up on that front. As well as I want to stay active on social media. I find that when I become busy I tend to forget about Twitter and Pinterest among other social media platforms.

Apart from those things I would really like to finish registering for classes at my local community college. However, I may not be able to do the bulk of it until July so I will have to see how it goes. Also, I need to drink more water. I’ve cut out sodas completely over the last couple of months, but I still don’t find myself drinking enough water. So that’s another thing that I really want to improve upon.

What are your goals for the month of May?

Book Review: Wicked Desires (The Kategan Alphas #3) by T.A. Grey

Where To Find It

Amazon // Nook // Goodreads // Apple // Kobo

Genre: Erotic Romance // Thriller // Suspense

Series: Yes this is the third book in The Kategan Alpha series. However, all books in this series can be read independently. If you would like to read my reviews on the first book in this series, The Mating Cycle, you can click here, and if you would like to read my review of the second book, Dark Awakening, you can here.

Synopsis

The sight of her happily mated brothers has Vera biting her nails in frustration. When the opportunity arises for her to get away from it all she takes it—with one catch—Jackson Marsh. Jackson Marsh has been a pain in her butt from the moment she laid eyes on him. And now to repair his broken trust with her brother Rome, Jackson has agreed to protect Vera as she goes into enemy territory to negotiate with the vampires.

However the change of scenery doesn’t do anything to help Vera’s mood for there was one thing she didn’t think about when she came up with her brilliant plan—seeing her ex vampire lover. Now with her ex vying for her affections again and Jackson sending her body and heart through a loop, Vera must decide what to do with her heart, which has never fully healed itself from the past. In the midst of all the chaos, a vampire clan is threatening to take Kategan land. Together Vera and Jackson must fight to save Kategan land while trying to save each other from falling in love.

Review

It’s really rare for me to find a series that I can continue this far with, and I’m glad to say that this is one of them. After reading Dark Awakening I had thought I had found my new favorite book, but I’m wrong again. This is totally my new favorite, for now at least.

Wicked Desires really stole my heart and made me realize why I love T.A. Grey’s writing. Grey never fails to create relatable characters that feel so real even when they aren’t.

In The Mating Cycle I first met Vera. She was the spunky, outspoken, sister of Vane, and I really didn’t care for her too much to be honest. However, my opinion of her has now changed completely. Upon reading you really get to know her. She’s controlling and guarded, but that’s only because that she had been hurt.

When I found out that Vera’s love interest was Jackson Marsh I have to say I was a little surprised. I mean there weren’t any other original characters to choose from, but I was still surprised. In a good way though. Jackson is different being that he is human and not a werewolf, however he and Vera share common issues. Which is why I think that they are perfect for each other.

Another thing I really liked was the newly introduced supernatural creatures. There are vampires now! Not to mention the fact that Vera’s previous lover was a vampire. I love the integration of new types of characters.

All in all I can say Im very happy with this book. I feel like with each book they get more and more immersive. Yeah there were a few typos, but I think those are going to be fixed across all books. T.A. Grey seems to have been revamping all of her books lately. I definitely plan on continuing this series, because I’m emotionally invested in it at this point. I give this book a 4 out of 5 stars.

2017 Writing Updates

Camp NaNoWriMo April 2017 Results

This is probably going to be a fairly short post, because things did not go as planned during the month of April. I started out so strong, but it didn’t end that way.

As many of you may know I was using Camp NaNo as a way to jumpstart my revision/editing process on my novel Vendetta. I can say that it is quite effective if you are able to commit time specifically to write. I was not.

I had a goal of 35,000 words, and I ended up with 16,987 words by the 30th. I’m upset that I didn’t reach my goal, but I have to remember that there were a lot of factors I didn’t have control over.

One being my mothers week long stay in the hospital. That just turned everything upside down, and it sucked up all of my time. Even after she was released I was always busy with school, taking her to the doctors, going to the doctors myself, my normal responsibilities, and trying to find time to sleep. It was a hard month.

All of that being said I am continuing on with revisions/edits. I’m actually in the middle of completely rewriting the second half of the book. I’m hoping to have it polished and ready for an editor by June, but we will see where life takes me.

BOOK REVIEW: Dark Awakening (The Kategan Alphas #2) by T.A. Grey

Where To Find It

Amazon // Nook // Kobo

Genre: Eroctic Romance // Thriller // Suspense

Series: Yes, this is the second book it the series. However, these books do not need to be read in order as T.A. Grey focuses on different characters in each book. If you would like to see my review of the first book, The Mating Cycle, click here.

Synopsis

Once a vibrant woman, Alison Bennson suffered a terrible trauma in the past. When her past crashes back into her life, Alison must turn to the Kategans for help. Rome Kategan has been a haunting thought in her mind ever since she met the grinning rogue. If only she was the woman she used to be she could enjoy the sexy male, but instead she is haunted and fearful for the future.

Her past has emerged with vengeance and with one purpose in mind for Alison—death. Rome Kategan swears to protect Alison with a passionate determination that frightens Alison almost more than her past. Now, in the midst of danger, Rome must protect the woman he loves and convince her to be his mate.

Review

When I first began reading Dark Awakening  I honestly wasn’t expecting to like it more than I had liked The Mating Cycle. To me Sarina and Vane were the shit. However, I can say that I was pleasantly surprised.

In The Mating Cycle as a reader we are given a glimpse of Alison Bennson as the best friend of Sarina. In the first book we were told that Alison has had a rough past, especially when it came to men, but in Dark Awakening we get to know her at a whole new level. Her passions show through just as much as the skeletons from her closet.

I feel like T.A. Grey deserves some pretty big props for writing this book. I say that because with each book her writing just keeps getting better, and the character development is on point. The pacing was perfect for me, and I didn’t feel like the characters were rushed into the decisions that they made. They did things at their own pace even when things got hot and heavy.

I know after I finish reading the next book I’m going to be eating my words, but I think this is my new favorite of the series. I just feel like Alison is so likable and relatable. She’s young, has a great personality, and major guy problems. I feel like any girl my age can relate to that, even if it isn’t to the same exact circumstances.

There are so many good things that I can say about Dark Awakening that I don’t want to mention the bad. But I have to. There was a small issue and one quite big one in my opinion.

The small issue was just the odd typo or misspelled word. It wasn’t something major, so it really didn’t bother me. There really weren’t that many of them.

However, the bigger issue was kind of a plot hole. If you aren’t one for any sort of spoilers I would skip this section of the review. Alison and Rome have sex a couple of times during her breeding cycle, and he cums inside of her. After this happens there was a brief moment in the book where pregnancy was brought up as a possibility, but it was only a couple of sentences. After that it was not brought up for the remainder of the book, but I believe that it really should’ve been discussed further. Personally I feel like it leaves a hole in the plot.

So all in all I did really love this book. I loved Alison and Rome, the were honestly perfect. I also loved getting to see the characters from the last book re appear again in this one. I give this book a 4 out of 5 stars. I really wish it could’ve been a 5 star book.

BOOK REVIEW: The Mating Cycle (The Kategan Alphas #1) by T.A. Grey

Where You Can Find It

Goodreads   Amazon    Apple    Kobo  Nook

Genre: Eroctic Romance // Thriller // Suspense

Series: Yes. However all books in this series can be read as standalones as they all revolve around different characters.

Synopsis

Each year lykaen princess Sarina Brunes goes through her breeding cycle—a powerful force that makes the desire to mate nearly inescapable. When Sarina is sent away by her father to endure the breeding cycle alone, she never expects a sexy Alpha to come to her doorstep.

When Alpha Vane Kategan stumbles upon Sarina in her breeding cycle, he is determined to help her, if only to ease her pain. However, she denies them both what they so desperately want. But Vane won’t give up on his seduction until they both find bliss. What neither of them count on is falling in love.

Right when they need each other the most, they are torn apart by her father’s cruelty. Now Sarina must fight to be with the one she loves and risk losing the only family she has left in the process. Can Sarina escape her father’s grasp for the arms of the man she loves?

*Just a quick disclaimer before I get into the actual review. I’m under the impression that the author is in the beginning stages of changing the title for this book. I recently downloaded the boxset of the first three books, and the first book was called The Breeding Cycle not The Mating Cycle. I just wanted to let you guys know about this so that there is no confusion, because they are both the same book.

I’ve read this book three times over the last two years, just because I really love the characters. As a result of that T.A. Grey has become once of my favorite authors. Now this book is erotic paranormal romance, so if that’s not your thing then I don’t think this book would be for you.

These days with any book that I go into, I tend to discuss pretty much everything about it. Especially after the one I reviewed where the formatting was just absolutely terrible. This time around I read The Mating (or BreedingCycle in the boxset of the first three books, and I had absolutely no issues when it came to formatting. Everything looked smooth and pretty like an ebook should. From what I do recall, I didn’t have any issues with the kindle version of this book alone either.

From the very beginning it was just sex, sex, sex, and more sex. However, I think that it was done right and wasn’t over done. We’ve all read the books that are basically literary porn, and have no plot to them, but I have to say that I don’t believe this one would fall in the same category. Grey wrote the book, in my own opinion, in a way that she allowed the sex scenes to further progress the plot line. If that makes any sense.

Character wise your really focused in on Sarina and Vane. Oh, Sarina’s father as well. Yes there are secondary characters that are introduced, but you really don’t get a good sense of who they are as characters. You know their name, and their purpose, but that’s about it.

Now that I’ve continued the series I see why she chose to do that. It’s because with each book Grey picks a pair of secondary characters, and it shares their own individual stories.

Something that I really did like was that Grey gave the characters some legit problems and conflict. For instance, Sarina is forced by her father to deal with her cycle alone. As the book goes on she is forced to decide on obeying or betraying him and their pack. I honestly felt really bad for Sarina, and I love when authors make me feel for characters I one way or another. I feel like more erotica authors should focus on he character building and story like Grey has here.

This book is also very descriptive. You will know what’s going on and where while being able to have a clear mental image of it.

Now it wasn’t all peaches and cream for me like I’m sure you all are thinking. I did really like this book, but it really could have used a better editor. There were some typos, misspelled words, and tense changes that I caught while reading the boxset version. I’m not sure if its specific to just that version or not. However it wasn’t on every single page, I think I only saw about five errors in the whole thing.  That is the only reason why I could bring myself to give this book a five star rating.

So, I give the book a solid 4.5 stars out of 5. It’s a good, quick, read for you when you wanna escape from the world for a little bit.

Oh, also I wanted to tell you guys that the boxset of the first three books in this series is currently FREE on amazon!! So if you want give this book a go you can click here . It’s also good because if you end up really loving the book, like I did, you’ll already the next two downloaded and ready to go!
